A Practice
Built on Listening
Design begins before the first sketch â in the questions we ask and the silences we pay attention to.
Back to HomeHow Yara Interiors Began
Yara Interiors was founded in 2016 by designer Yara Othman, following a decade working within large architectural practices across Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. She noticed, over time, that the clients who felt most satisfied weren't always the ones with the largest budgets â they were the ones whose homes genuinely reflected how they lived.
That insight became the founding principle of this studio. Every project begins with a visit and a real conversation. We ask about daily routines, morning light, family habits, what you collect, what you want to stop seeing. From that, a design direction begins to form â not from a catalogue, but from what already exists in the life of the people who live there.
Today the studio works with homeowners, heritage property owners, and select commercial clients across Damansara Heights, TTDI, Bangsar, and Mont Kiara. Projects range from a single room consultation to full renovation oversight spanning several months.
Our Design Philosophy
-
Begin with Questions
We spend more time listening than drawing. The first session exists to understand, not to impress.
-
Layered, Not Decorated
Good interiors have depth â materials that age well, proportions that feel right, objects with history. We avoid the merely fashionable.
-
Designed for This Climate
We account for Malaysia's heat, humidity, and monsoon light in every material and spatial decision we make.
-
Honest Throughout
If something won't work within your budget or timeline, we say so early â and suggest what will.

How We Work
The principles and practices that guide every project we take on.
Written Agreements
Every engagement begins with a clear written scope. No ambiguity about what is included, what it costs, and what happens at each stage.
Client Confidentiality
Your home and personal preferences remain private. We do not share project images without explicit consent, and never use client spaces in promotional material without permission.
Vetted Contractors Only
We work with a select network of craftsmen and contractors we have built relationships with over years. Quality and reliability, not the lowest quote.
Site Inspections
During the implementation phase, we conduct regular site visits to verify that workmanship meets the specifications in the design brief.
Material Responsibility
We prioritise materials from responsible sources â local timber, low-VOC finishes, and suppliers who can demonstrate ethical sourcing practices where possible.
Post-Completion Review
We schedule a follow-up visit after you've lived in the completed space for a few weeks â to hear what's working well and address any remaining details.
Interior Design in Kuala Lumpur
The interior design landscape in Kuala Lumpur is broad, ranging from large commercial firms to solo practitioners. Yara Interiors sits deliberately in the latter category â a studio small enough to give every client direct access to the designer, but experienced enough to handle projects of meaningful scale and complexity.
Our work covers residential interiors across Greater KL, with a particular depth of experience in landed homes, condominium redesigns, and properties with heritage or period character. We are drawn to spaces that have been lived in â where there is something to preserve as well as something to improve.
For commercial clients, we focus on intimate spaces where atmosphere matters: private dining rooms, small boutique offices, wellness studios, and reception areas where first impressions carry weight. We do not take on large retail fit-outs or corporate office floors â this is a deliberate choice that keeps our work personal and our attention focused.
Have a Space in Mind?
We'd welcome a conversation about your project â no obligation, simply an exchange of ideas.
